We Leave The Coast Behind

Since leaving Lima we have been following the coast of Peru along the PanAmerican highway, with the Andes in constant view on one side and the Ocean on the other. As we left Nazca for our long eleven-hour drive to Arequipa, we would leave the coast behind and head into the Andes.

Our first stop, just outside of Nazca, was to see some mummified graves that were found. These shallow graves were of common people, and were victim to grave robbers, who were after the gold, silver, and tapestries that these people were buried with. The average height of these people was 1.5 meters, and their average lifespan from 21-45 years old, though some as old as 60 have been found.

The long drive continued to be mostly desert, but then we began to get into wetter regions. Their rivers had flowing water, and in some places (where the Andes met the coast) they had fields of rice patties.

We arrived to Arequipa, a huge city, at 8:30pm. Our hotel, again, is lovely. The elevation here is 2300m (Calgary is 1300m), so we did quite the jump from sea level to here. Other than being tired, everyone is feeling pretty good. Roger has been battling a cold, and Joan is happy to be in Arequipa as her luggage may finally meet up with us! (She has been traveling without any luggage since her arrival in Peru, as it was left in New Zealand and has been chasing us ever since. She has very positive outlooks about the situation, and has even enjoyed not having to worry about luggage/packing/etc, though she does wish they would give her air miles for all of her suitcases' travels! Lol). So after a long day traveling and the change in altitude, we went for a quick supper and drink before bed. The pizzas looked lovely, personal size thin crusts baked in a kiln-like oven, and I had shaved chicken kebab on salad. We have started drinking the coca tea, too, which is supposed to aid in altitude sickness.
